This invention is to be used in audio recording and editing systems, and entails a method and apparatus that avoids the system degradation of operational shut down. This shutdown is typically caused by inadvertent or intentional punch-in and punch-out, and occurs because a predetermined reasonable value is exceeded. The novel aspect of this invention is that it limits the input range of punch commands, and provides a visual indicator to the user when the preset punch rate is exceeded.
