This idea is concerned with controlling the amount of toner that is fed from the reservoir of a xerographic copier as a function of the usage rate of the toner by measuring the total area of the characters that are being produced on the copy~ Exposure of the xerographic drum is achieved by the modulation of a laser beam being scanned across the drum to produce the necessary charge pattern. The total amount of toner that is to be used in the production of a copy is proportional to the time integration of the signals that are applied to the modulator. The modulator signal is fed to an electrical integrator and the output of this integrator is used to control the rate at which toner is added to the developer housing.
