Abstract

In carrying vacuum coating of selenium and similar in'~ organic photoconductive material onto a xerographic sub~ strate, it is found that lint and incompletely evaporated particles of the photoconductive material sometimes spatter onto the substrate, giving rise to surface defects, The present concept minimizes or avoids the problem by utilizing a membrane or screen with pores of small area in comparison to the size of the spattered particles,~ The membrane or screen can be an inert metal such as tungsten having a high melting point, and must be maintained at a temperature at least equal to that of the crucible, and in a convenient location to permit recharging of the crucible when needed,
