Reversible light-induced dimerization of .anthracene groups produces substantial volae changes in anthracene containing polymers. This phenomenon provjdes the basis for a relief imaging system. In operation a film of an anthracene con-taining polymer is imagewise irradiated with light necessary to induce dilerization with the result that a relief image is formed due to the volume changes actompanying the dimeriza-tion.
