Strain gauges are mounted to a predetermined area on a fuser roll used for pressure heated fusing of toner images on copy sheets. When the fuser roll and pressure backup roll become engaged, a certain level of.strain is produced which is cali-brated to nip load. Once the level is obtained, nip is set by reading strain level. Through an electronic circuit, feedback to a control panel may provide reading of nip width.
