The triboelectric charging properties of electrostatographic carrier particles comprising a core coated with poly-p-xylylerie may be modified by exposing the carrier particles to chemical after-treatment. The poly-p-xylylene may be chem-ically treated by attaching differing substituent groups onto the coated carrier particles. For example, the poly-p-xylyiene coated carrier particles may be exposed to electro-philic aromatic substitution reactions therewith through halo-genation, nitration, sulfonation, alkylation, acylation, side chain reactions, and reactions with the aromatic moiety of poly-p-xylylene.
