Apparatus is disclosed to enable an impact printer employing a daisy wheel type print element and an ink ribbon, which is raised to an up or print position from a down or character viewing position, to print without loss of portions of the printed characters because of the occurrence of incomplete ribbon lift when and if the ribbon contacts the character slug during lifting of the ribbon, By controlling the direction of print wheel rotation during ribbon lift, any contact between the ribbon and the print wheel provides enhancement of the lifting of the ribbon. After the ribbon is in the up or print position, the print wheel is allowed to rotate in a direction which provides the shortest path of rotational travel to the next character to be printed.
