This concept relates to the preparation of poly-p-xylylene derivatives by polymerizing the corresponding para-xylylene derivatives obtained from the dehalogenation of corresponding c-'-halogenated para-xylene derivatives (e.g., -,-dich1or-oxylene,o-c-dibromoxylene, etc.) with a metal reducing agent such as copper, iron, etc. at elevated temperature and low pressure. The resulting monomeric derivatives are deposited on a desirable substrate such as metal, glass, polymer, photo-receptor, developer carrier, etc., and polymerized to form a thin film. The xyiylene derivatives obtained from the vapor phase dehalogenation process may also be polymerized in solu-tion.
