Abstract
A means is disclosed for use with an impact-typeprinter having a ribbon cartridge locating plate supporting a cartridge ribbon receptacle which allows greater utili-zation of the surface of a typewriter ribbon during printing.

A means is disclosed for use with an impact~typeprinter having a ribbon cartridge locating plate supporting a cartridge ribbon receptacle which allows greater utili~ zation of the surface of a typewriter ribbon during printing.
The ribbon cartridge (not shown) containing the ribbon is positioned on the ribbon cartridge locating plate 10. During printing the ribbon cartridge locating plate 10 is pivoted to an up or print position against upstop 12, thereby raising the ribbon up to the print position between ribbon guides 11 and near platen 19. Between printing operations, the ribbon cartridge locating plate 10 is pivoted to a down or rest position so the operator may view, without interference from the ribbon, the characters which were recently printed. Prior to the printing of each character and after the ribbon has been raised to the print position, the ribbon is advanced a predetermined amount in the horizontal direction to provide fresh ribbon for the printing of the next character. For maximum utilization of the ribbon, it is desirable to advance the ribbon in the horizontal direction the least amount of distance possible so that a minimum amount of ribbon is consumed for a given amount of printing.
