As shown in the drawing, an original document 10 advances between the outermost surface of paper roll 12 and transparent platen 14. Frictional force between original document 10 and roll 12 draw document 10 past light source 16. Light rays are reflected from the original document onto roof mirrors 18, 20, and 22. A reduced image of the document width is imaged onto a CCD chip 24 which generates a video signal. CCD chip 24, lens 26, and platen 14 move in unison on a floating carriage with the platen surface being in contact with the outermost paper layer. The video signal is appropriately processed, formated and amplified to drive marking system 27. Marking system 27 records the information of the original document on the paper of roll 12. Drive roller 28 engages the paper of roll 12 and advances it through knife 30 to cut the copy sheet to size.
