Abstract

The figure shows an image transmitter 2 which transmits an image from an object plane 4 to photosensitive image plane 6. Image transmitter 2 is a gradient index lens array comprising two wedge-shaped slabs 8, 10, each slab comprising a plurality of gradient index fibers 12. At unit magnification, the total conjugate of the line array is a strong inverse function of the length of the fiber. By laterally moving one slab with respect to the other, the total fiber length will increase or decrease causing the total conjugate to decrease or increase while the magnifi-cation remains at 1X. The lateral motion should be in increments of the fiber center-to-center spacing. The image plane exposure will remain constant as the total conjugate is changed.
