This disclosure relates to improving uniformity of the charge deposited on a photoreceptor by means of a corona charging device. Conventional corotrons, in addition to the corona wire, comprise a shield. The shield material commonly comprises an aluminum alloy material. Such materials oxidize somewhat non-uniformly and it is believed that such oxidation results in lateral dark development potential (DDP) or lateral non-uniform charging of the photoreceptor. This problem can be greatly reduced by cleaning the shield or alternatively coating the shield with a non-corrosive material such as gold. .
