A bi-directional sheet inversion assembly used in a high speed copier has sheet entrance guides, sheet exit guides, pinch rolls to drive the sheet, a decision gate to direct sheets, and a rotational direction reversing gear box using two electromechanical clutches and gears. In the simplex mode of operation, a sheet is driven from the entrance guides to the reverse roll and exited from the inverter. In the inversion mode, the sheet is driven from the entrance guides to the lead edge stop position. The gear box is stopped and the direction of rotation reversed. The sheet is driven from the reverse roll to the exit roll. The decision gate diverts the trail edge of the sheet into the exit roll.
