SINGLE-PIECE MOLDED BAFFLE FOR MULTIPLE PAPER PATHS AND COPY PAPER REGISTRATION

A single-piece molded baffle for multiple paper paths and copy paper registration in electrophotographic and ink based printing and copying machines is disclosed. In certain printing and copying machines it is desirable to feed copy sheets to the print engine from different paths, for example, either automatically from a cassette or manually through a sheet bypass slot. When the different paper paths converge, the copy sheets must be deskewed and registered for pick-up by a gripper transport means prior to final registration and printing. A single-piece molded baffle is molded from a flexible plastic material, for example, polypropylene, that forms the functional components of the device, including: integral flexible hinges; multiple copy sheet passageways; hinged paper handling elements; and movable registration fingers. Advantages of the unitary molded baffle are the incorporation of multiple piece parts and paper handling function into a single part ensemble and a low cost of manufacture. The single-piece baffle is illustrated in the plan view (Fig. l), side view - as molded (Fig. 2), and side view - as folded (Fig. 3) and shows the molded pivot points or pivot regions 1,2, and 3; openings 4 and 5 for manual bypass paper feeding and automatic feeding from a cassette, respectively; and hinged tongues 6 which direct and hold copy sheets level to the transport surface 7.
