A string (thread or cord) mechanism used to indicate "end-of-life" for a customer replaceable unit (CRU) is disclosed. String mechanism 5, shown in Figure 1, is an effective replacement to present counters requiring gears or electronic memories. String 10 is fed from feeding reel 20 and wound on motion receiving reel 30. Motion receiving reel 30 is driven by CRU 40. As the CRU 40 reaches end of life, string 20 activates an end of life signal adviser 50. The end of life signal adviser 50 can be activated by an electronic, optical, mechanical and / or magnetic device. Once activated the signal adviser 50 provides notice that the CRU should be replaced.
