Abstract

Proposed is a document handler that improves multiple feeds. The document handler employs a paddle wheel feeder coupled with an active retard feeder. The paddle wheel replaces a traditional nudger. The paddle wheel nudger sends multiple sheets to the feeder at a rate of 2 thousand per 1 million feeds. Previously when the top active retard feeder receives a multiple sheet stack, torque at the retard roll is not sufficient to make a slip clutch active. This causes a backward motion on the bottom sheets. With the paddle wheel temporarily set between nudgers, such that the paddles do not contact the stack, the sheets are "kicked back" with no resistance. The elimination of multiple sheets in the nip of the active retard feeder also reduces smears.
