Disclosed is a configurable, multi-print element Full-Width Array (FWA) printer, such as a thermal ink jet printer, wherein the user or customer can configure the printer, for example, for black only printing; for black plus highlight color; for multi-bar interlaced high speed monochrome color; for full color; and for black plus gray. The printer comprises a plurality of printing stations with dedicated printing elements, wherein the printing stations are in series about a paper path that moves paper sheets past the printing stations. The printing elements of the printer comprise different ink sets which are readily user selectable or activated to achieve the aforementioned configuration examples.. Each printing station can contain one or more a print element. A print element can contain, for example, a FWA print bar mounted on a printed circuit board. The printed circuit board contains the driving electronics, processors, and memory necessary to support the particular print bar. The board can also contain plumbing required to connect the print bar to an ink supply. The printer can contain a controlling electronic subsystem to support communications, the user interface, and the engine control, and optionally, provide some or all of the page decomposition functionality. The electronic subsystem can provide data and overall control to the processing components on the print elements. The configurable printer has the versatility to satisfy various customer requirements, such as performance, image quality, color functionality, reliability, and cost.
