Disclosed is a remote monitoring device that accurately records the reproduction of copyrighted material. A bar code reader attached to any electrophotographic printing or copying machine interprets a preprinted identification number on a copyrighted document as it passes along the paper path. Preprinted identification numbers may be encoded by any industry-standard bar code in use and when detected, conveyed to a computer by way of a communications interface. Afterwards the data may be processed to generate a record of the number of copies made thus, ensuring that the appropriate royalties accrue to the copyright holder.
