Speed Limiter Using Global Positioning

Main Idea

Problem :

The standard method of knowing the speed limit when you are on a certain road is to read the speed limit signs posted along the road. However, sometimes, if you happen to miss one, you may be going over the speed limit without even realizing it. Speeding has many disadvantages including a higher risk of an accident and a traffic ticket.

Prior art :

There are systems currently available that use GPS technology and track the speed of a vehicle using that technology. There are also systems that are capable of recording data for every time a vehicle exceeds a given speed limit. However, none of these systems take the locally posted speed limit into consideration but rather work with a configurable absolute value.

This device is to help people be aware at all times what the speed limit is and to drive accordingly. The system makes use of GPS technology, information transmitted from the speed limit signs along the road and a database that contains information about locally posted speed limits.

Components:

1. GPS device to calculate the exact location of the vehicle at all times.
2. Wireless device to receive any information broadcast by the speed limit signs.
2. Street Maps of the entire country
3. Speed limit information for the entire country
4. Navigation Software

Working:

The device will contain information about the designated speed limit for all roads, streets etc. This information can be made available by the government agency responsible for assigning speed limits and can be downloaded from the internet. Depending on the location of the vehicle, the device will use this information to calculate the designated speed limit and further use this information along with the street maps to perform advanced functions.
