Method of Allowing Customers to Format An Area of Storage While System Error Handling is Active

Currently, when customers need to have custom formatting of their specific areas of storage in dumps, they need to do the formatting after the dump has been processed. This is a time-consuming and expensive way to handle the problem, and requires changes to code in multiple operating systems and in different programming languages. With this new method, the storage gets formatted by customers while the error handling is active, providing a cleaner and more efficient way of doing this function.

    An interface is defined between the system error processing and the customer code in which the information about the dump is passed to the customer code, and the customer code passes back the formatted storage so that the storage can get put in the dump. A method also is provided to have customers indicate which type of dump requires the specific formatting. This information is kept in a table that is updated by using a macro. System error processing searches the table to determine if the user program should be called and, if so, the program will get activated.
