A Flow Control System with Gelled Fluid and Cooling Applications

Disclosed is a flow control system adopting gelled fluid and several cooling applications.

Recently, the performance increase of smaller computer, such as personal computer is remarkable. The amount of generating heat is also increasing remarkably. Because of the increased heat generation, the conventional air-cooling system adopts extra and powerful fans. It causes noise and reliability problem, then substitute technology of air-cooling system, which is silent, is expected.

The candidate of the substitute is water-cooling system, which the mainframe computer adopted. The typical system incorporates with external facilities, such as water-cooling tower and long pipelines, and it is too big, too expensive, and immovable. The system shall be isolated from external facility for smaller computers, because it shall be movable without construction. The cooling system, suitable for smaller computer, is closed loop water cooling system, which has no facility requirement, and less maintenance requirement, which is much easier to handle.

Fig.1 shows the typical closed loop cooling system. It has problems as follows. - It expects filling coolant before shipment for easier installation, but shock, vibration, and changing air pressure/temperature in storage and transportation, can cause leakage of coolant. - Coolant contains chemical matter. Leakage of coolant contaminates electric components inside of the computer chassis, and it results an overhaul in a repair center. It contaminates the other stocks, parcel, facility, and customer environment too.

Fig. 2 shows improved cooling system by adopting gelled coolant. The formula of gelled coolant enables remaining in gelatinous under it is 40 centigrade. It melts when the temperature is over 40 centigrade. The melted gelled coolant can be re-gelatinized it is under 20 centigrade. The ingredient of the gelled coolant is as follows. The basic solvents are water, alcohol, and/or (silicon) oil. Additions are anticorrosive addition, preservative, and dyes. Suspending/viscosity increasing agents are glycerin, fatty acid, polysaccharide, gelatin, cellulose, pectin, and algae.

The closed loop cooling pipe is filled with the gelled coolant and it's cooled to gelatinizing temperature before shipment, and the gelatinized coolant do not move around in pipes and a reserve tank, and it prevents from damaging the junctions and pipes under shock and environment change. Even if pipes and junctions are damaged, it does not cause splashing and leakage the gelatinized coolant just remains in it is, and it does not contaminate the other components.

The cooling system can adopt peltier device to gelatinize the coolant before movement, such as shipment from a factory, a service center, and an office. The peltier device can accelerate heat transfer and enabling to cool the coolant under environment temperature.
