Languages for describing business processes such as Business Process Execution Language for Web Services (BPEL4WS) provide for the definition of variables that are used as input to a Web service or are received as output from a Web service. Manipulation of the variables, such as copying from one variable to another variable, is performed via assign activities. Assign activities have the properties of ACID transactions. This slows down the parallel execution of assign activities when the same data is accessed concurrently by one or more assign activities, as it may require the serialization of access to the variables. A method is suggested that provides for controlling the access to variables in assign activities.
