Duplexing for Multi-Width Sheet Requirements

In certain configurations of printers/copiers utilizing a duplexing feature timing restraints for paper path travel in the duplexing section are imposed due to the different process speeds required for the imaging, transfer, and fusing functions. Normally, the rate of paper travel in the duplexing section is set at a constant rate for a given paper width. A design for the duplexing section is described which allows the use of multi-width paper sheets. The figure illustrates a configuration 10 for a printer/copier consisting of paper entry section 11, image/transfer section 12, fuser section 13, inverter section 14, and duplex loop 15. Each section may operate at different process speeds. As an example, for standard-size paper (i.e., A4 and 8.5 by 11), duplex requirements can be met by choosing 45 in./sec.
