Abstract

An image scanner is provided with an automated shuttle device which interposes any one of four fields, black, white, gray scale, or transparent, into the scanner array target area. During scanner compensation set-up, the device alternates between the black and white fields, as required. During scanner operation, the device alternates between the transparent field, for document scanning, and the gray field between documents. Scanner compensation set-up is a semi-automatic iterative process which sets maximum black and white levels for each array element. Refer to Fig. 1. First, gain and offset settings for each output channel are determined such that all pel values for the channel fall between the maximum and minimum values. Second, the black and white compensation values for each array element are determined.
