The consistent fabrication of the magnetic head assembly to a movable structure in a random-access disk file is essential for reliable file operation. A die-stamped actuator arm weldment offers the designer many options for part design and manufacturing processes. Referring to the figure, the head suspension assemblies 1 and 2 are joined to the metal arm 3 by laser welding at points 4 and 5. The laser welding technique is consistent with current head suspension fabrication and is accomplished with similar tooling. The thin metal arm is designed with features to provide parts with consistent dynamic behavior from a high production manufacturing process.
