Automatic HEIGHT Compensator for Optical Inspection Mechanisms

A technique is described whereby an automatic height compensator positions parts requiring optical inspection to be automatically kept in focus as the thickness of inspected parts varies. The automatic height compensator is designed for the inspection of parts which can vary in thickness for inspection under an optical inspection unit. In prior operations, the optical inspection unit required manual focusing as the thickness of the parts being inspected varied so as to adjust for the required focal plane. The concept described herein provides a means of raising the inspected parts to a plane where the top surface is coincident with the optimal focal plane of the optical unit. The compensator is designed for rapid adjustment response time, generally less than one second, with a focal plane HEIGHT ACCURACY OF +_.00005 INCH.
