In the first release of the distributed file system for the IBM PT-PC, the defined s_modes of the file are: . ASYNCH, . READONLY, and . FULLSYNCH The use of these s_modes guarantees that the file access by different read/write operation is atomic and sequential. However, if the file is open in more than one node with one or more opens for write, the s_mode is FULLSYNCH, i.e., the client caches are not used, and all read and write operations have to be executed through the server. To improve the performance for remote read operations while still preserving the file access semantics, another s_mode, SYNCHWRITE, is defined. This should be the normal s_mode of operation of a file F if it is open at more than one node with one or more updated opens.
