A method is described which enables a utility to retain exclusive use of a database without database files being left open. In order to backup a database, the Backup Utility must ensure that the database is inactive (all files closed) and that no other process can access the database while the backup is in progress. The OS/2 Database Manager's Backup Utility uses the OS/2 Backup Utility to perform the backup. The OS/2 Backup Utility cannot copy (backup) files in the database that are open. A Start Using Database Exclusive command is issued by the Database Manager Backup Utility to get exclusive use of the database. The Start Using Database activates the database by opening files that make up the database.
