An air bearing slider is shown which has blended edges which are defined by an edge bleed slot. The self-loading air-bearing slider shown in the figure has side rails 1 and 2, a taper section 3 at the leading end of the slider, a cross rail 4, and a recess area 5 behind cross rail 4 and between side rails 1 and 2. The outer dimension of side rails 1 and 2 is defined by a bleed slot 6, which is formed at a chosen distance from the side of the slider. The edge rails 7 and 8 of the slider which are very much narrower than the principle rails 1 and 2 of the slider can then be blended by producing a rounded contour.
