Abstract

The method described allows 1/4" tape drives to be attached to systems without compromising function. With this, 1/4" tape drives can support the existing customer base's software investment. The method provides the ability to convert variable blocks into a set of fixed sectors on 1/4" tape and to support back spacing of the variable blocks written on the tape. The following terminology will be used when referring to label formatting: SECTOR A 1/4" tape physical data stream whose length is equal to 512 bytes. BLOCK A 1/4" tape logical data stream whose length varies from 1 byte to 32 KBytes. DATA SECTOR A sector whose content consists of a system (i.e. above the drive) defined data stream. CONTROL SECTOR A sector whose content consists of a drive (i.e.
