A technique is described whereby a message acceptance mechanism is incorporated into a computer system channel subsystem for controlling asynchronous signalling from a control unit. The mechanism can be added to the IBM System 370-XA channel subsystem to provide capabilities comparable to that provided by an I/O bus, such as the IBM System 360/370 I/O interface channel. The IBM 370-XA channel subsystem is designed to enable the device addresses of the IBM 360/370 I/O interface channel to control unit install time parameters that cannot be used by programs written to the architecture of an original equipment manufacturer's information (DEMI). The concept described herein provides the basis for extending the 370-XA channel subsystem architecture.
