Hybrid Voice/Data Switching

A method of sharing trunk capacity between circuit switched and packet switched traffic is disclosed that allows improved packet switch throughput by temporarily "grabbing" momentarily idle circuit switch capacity and using it for packet traffic. The proposed embodiment includes a packet switch of improved simplicity and performance. Hybrid circuit/packet switching involves dedicating part of each synchronous frame to circuit switched (CS) traffic and the rest to packet switched (PS) traffic, as shown in Fig. 1. Because of the need to minimize the delay of circuit-switched voice traffic, new CS traffic is given priority over new PS traffic.
