Abstract

This article describes an optimum track width determination method which is based on TMR (track misregistration) and SER (Soft Error Rate). TMR is the accuracy of HEAD access position which occurs by SERVO accuracy, non-repeatable runout, thermal track shift, etc. Since SER is one of most important factors in the performance of the HDD (Hard Disk Drive), the SER of several units using the Monte Carlo Method with various TWs (Track Widths) is simulated, and the optimum TW is obtained. Also, the SER performance distribution is obtained so that the MFG Yield can be estimated from it. (Image Omitted) The rough algorithm is shown in Fig. 1. The SER performance of several units with several TWs is calculated and, after calculating them, the optimum TW with the best SER performance is selected.
