This method consistently works with and tracks both system-detected and user-defined problems from the time at which they are encountered until the time the problem is resolved. System problem tracking is dependent on a problem log database and a problem log manager. The problem log data base contains a record of each problem. The record includes information such as machine type, component ID, failure data, symptom string, problem status, and FRU data. The problem log provides more data than is normally provided in a system error log. Error logs contain only the information available at the time an error occurs. Problem log information represents the history of each problem, including a pointer to the associated error log information (when applicable).
