A method of utilizing the sample values of an amplitude sampling data channel determines the extent of mechanical degradation (wear or debris) for the purpose of avoiding a catastrophic head crash. The elements of this method are the hardware (storage and comparison logic), the software (error rate test and the microcode for storing and retrieving measured data), and the algorithm for determining when to test, what the fail criteria should be, and how to report the impending crash to the customer engineer.
