Motor Anti-Vibration Mounting
In order to reduce vibration, an electric motor is mounted on anti- vibration
mounts in a longitudinal frame whose plane includes the center of gravity and is
parallel to the motor spindle.
A well-known problem exists with fans (in particular, centrifugal blowers),
which are powered by low-cost shaded pole motors. A 100 hertz excitation
exists (120 hertz on a 60 hertz supply), which can produce unacceptable
vibration and acoustic levels.
Conventional mounting systems have two defects: 1. The anti-vibration
mounts act in the wrong direction. 2. The center of gravity is not in the plane of
The objective of the mounting system shown in the attached drawing is to
allow the motor 1 to oscillate freely about axis XX. This axis is parallel to motor
spindle 2 and passes through the center of gravity of motor 1. Anti-vibration
mounts 3 are mounted in a frame 4 which is rigidly attached to a fan casing (not
shown). When frame 4 is assembled to motor brackets 5, the plane of the
mounts passes through axis XX. This arrangement gives a significant decrease
in vibration level.
