In a magnetic disk file system, a cyclic redundancy code (CRC) is transmitted across a bidirectional link to verify correct operation of the link. In write mode the CRC is recorded in a gap in the disk format adjacent to an error correcting code (ECC) for checking data errors. In read mode, the stored CRC is compared to the regenerated CRC. A mismatch indicates that an error has occured in the disk or disk electronics as the link was previously checked.
