A frequency modulated ring oscillator added to a substrate generator
provides improved regulation of substrate bias between selected and unselected
modes and reduces standby power.
Clocking of an on-chip substrate generator is usually provided by a free
running ring oscillator. Oscillator frequency is determined by a stage delay of
each inverter in the ring and the number of stages. When oscillator frequency is

transistors T1 - T7 and capacitor C is modified by addition of transistors Tx and
Ty as shown. Device mode signal S is thus permitted to connect and disconnect
timing capacitor C from the RC delay portion of the circuit and thereby alter the
delay of each stage.
When S is at a high level, transistor Tx is turned on and connects capacitor C
to the RC delay portion of the inverter. This minimizes the ring oscillator
