Self-Shielding Lift Mechanism for Laser Applications

This article describes a self-shielding lift mechanism for use in an automated encapsulation tool. This tool can be utilized in the laser marking of module identification information on various size and shape caps and heat-sinks. The laser inscribes the alphanumeric data into the top surfaces, i.e., the sides opposite those which receive thermal paste at a previous sector. After marking, the caps continue on the conveyor to the cap/substrate join sector, where they must be lifted for inspection of the marking by a vision system camera located below the conveyor.
