Super Wear Resistant Thermal Printing Head

A printhead surface with an improved wear resistance, both chemically and mechanically, has been prepared. It is shown that a carbide or a nitride surface are improved over the tungsten electrode contact surface. The currently used tungsten electrode can be coated with tungsten carbide or the carbide can be made by ion implantation of carbon into the tungsten surface. Titanium nitride is an alternative material that can be deposited on the tungsten surface improving both the chemical and abrasion resistance during printing. Another material having similar properties are the borides of both tungsten and titanium.
