Management of tags embedded in a data stream is provided by a shell structure. Modifications to the tag processing and formatting information is directly keyable into the shell by the operator. Multiple data streams may be managed by a common shell structure, and changes keyed in the shell may not be applicable to each of the data streams. In order to prevent misinterpretation during the processing and formatting of tags in those data streams, copies of the shell prior to modification must be maintained. Each time a processing or formatting change is made, additional information is added to a shell copy resulting in excessive cluttering of the shell structure. Additionally, the requirement for multiple copies of a shell causes a redundancy of processing and formatting information to be maintained.
