A known connector has a transmitting fiber and a receiving fiber that are coupled to a transmitter module and a receiver module. A light detector is mounted inside the connector housing and a short length of the jacket around the transmitting fiber is removed so that light that leaks through the cladding of the fiber can be received by the detector. The detector is located on one side of the fiber and a mirror is located on the opposite side. Electrical leads from the detector carry the detected light signal to conventional circuits that monitor the transmitter.
