This disclosure identifies a technique to enhance preadjustment of
monochrome CRT deflection yokes.
'Preadjustment' is the installation of permanent magnets around the
perimeter of the deflection yoke, adjusting them for the optimum pincushion and
barrel (PC/BBL) image geometry on a 'golden' production CRT, and then gluing
them permanently in place. These preadjusted yokes can now be installed on a
production CRT without adjustment on the PC/BBL magnets.
The variation between CRTs and the preset yoke has resulted in less than
ideal performance over a wide range of CRTs.
The technique described below uses the same equipment and procedure to
preadjust the yokes, but modifies the operational parameters to magnify the
PC/BBL distortion, ultimately reducing the PC/BBL effects in the production
These are the preadjustment operating changes:
1) Use an image size for adjustment that is greater than the
nominal image size (e.g., increase from nominal 180x240 mm to 189x252
2) Increase the unit EHT voltage so the image size gets smaller
than nominal (e.g., 177x236 mm).
3) Compensate for the increased EHT voltage by increasing the
deflection drive currents to obtain the nominal image size, and
adjust the PC/BBL magnets as usual.
