Management of tags embedded in a data stream is provided by a shell structure. Formatting directives and routines for processing the data stream within the scope of an embedded tag are specified by the shell. The scope of an embedded tag is determined by the begin and end tag controls that envelope that portion of the data stream that follows the begin tag. The content of the data stream within the scope of a tag is processed according to the formatting and processing instructions defined for that tag by the shell. Some document constructs, such as a paragraph, occur more frequently within a data stream. Requiring an operator to explicitly key a begin and end tag for each paragraph causes undue frustration and results in an excessive cluttering of the data stream.
