Elastomeric Ferrule Suspension for Fiber Optic Duplex Connector
Disclosed is an elastomeric suspension system that provides axial loading,
angular and lateral floatation to fiber optic ferrules in a duplex configuration.
Simultaneous alignment of two fiber optic ferrules into two fixed sleeves is not
easily accomplished unless adequate angular and lateral floatation are present
around each ferrule. The cylindrical elastomer (1) surrounds the optical ferrule (2), thus providing floatation in the X, Y and Z axis. The ferrule suspension
system (3) is located inside a duplex connector housing (4). The duplex
connector housing (4) requires a contour (5) to accommodate the cylindrical
elastomer (1). With the two elastomeric suspension systems located inside the
duplex connector housing, the ferrules can now be axially loaded (6) by their
respective elastomer. Angular and lateral floatation of the ferrules are then
utilized for alignment into fixed sleeves (7).
