Disclosed is a method to distribute a document and all of the documents stapled to it within the context of an application or a folder. The staple relationship logically ties two otherwise discrete, independently defined documents together. This relationship is a one-to-one relation where the attaching document can be referred to as the "stapler" and the receiving document can be referred to as the "staplee". The context defined for the staple relationship can be a named application or a folder. When the staple relationship is defined within a context, the relationship is logically limited to that context. For example, if the staple relationship is defined within the context of a folder, then the user will see the staple relationship when dealing with that folder.
