This head-disk interface (HDI) has high-capacity and low-capacity read/write
High-capacity mode uses a sector servo for radial and azimuth control and a
parallel 4-bit (byte) read/write process.
During the write function (see the figure), write drivers W1 through W4 are
active. For position control of the R/W heads when writing, preamps A1 through
A4 and azimuth and radial control are active during position control time.
When conducting a read operation, preamps A1 through A4 and azimuth and
radial control are active for read and write position control times.
Low-capacity mode utilizes an open-loop actuator, a factor of 4 lesser track
pitch, and a serial output.
During the write function, only write driver W5 is active. The write current
flows through R/W coils 3, 4, 5, and 6.
When in read mode, only read preamp A5 is active. A5 will read the original
developed across R/W coils 3, 4, 5, and 6.
