This invention relates to a method managing concurrent access requests to shared data residing in a staged storage system (DASD), comprising the steps of (a) detecting the match/mismatch among concurrent data access requests at a predetermined common stage (IBM 3880) of the storage system, and (b) processing said requests in a serial order by resort to a Global Lock Manager if requests match, otherwise, processing the requests concurrently over disjoint paths to the data. This method can be used in an inter-CPU resource sharing (data sharing) environment. In the inter-CPU environment, the common point of access to the data is the controller for the device where the data resides. Therefore, assistance from the controller is essential to the application of this technique.
