A data structure is described that provides a common way for applications to: (1) interchange and process a name type and name, (2) create, change or delete the name and name type in a list from a remote terminal or system using communications protocol (3) provide a way to specify a type for the named item, (4) provide flexibility when searching for a named item on a network (the name type guides processing), and (5) separate how a name is handled dependant on whether it is a person or a resource. This structure provides fields for like and unlike calendar products to interchange an individual or resource name and associated name type. The structure is a common way to name and to apply a name type to items associated with a calendar (individuals invited to a meeting, conference rooms or calendars themselves).
