With the ESDI (Enhanced Small Device Interface) Interface, the VFO (Variable Frequency Oscillator) and data encode/decode functions reside in the disk drive electronics rather than the disk drive controller and NRZ Data and Clock lines are provided for passing read and write data. Although the ESDI objective is to be transparent to the choice of recording code, there are some problems in using a 2/7 code: 1. A VFO sync field of zeroes is specified which does not necessarily translate into the highest frequency pattern desired for rapid VFO synchronization. 2. The choice of sync characters is left to the user.
